Exploring the Unique Charm of Bato de Luna Art Gallery in La Union

From an ordinary pebbles transformed into an artwork is what Bato de Luna Art Gallery is all about. It’s an open-air gallery that houses artworks created out of rocks, stones, wood, and pebbles.
Located in the coastal town of Luna, La Union, the Bato de Luna Art Gallery is one of the three tourism landmarks that have capitalized on stones and pebbles as an attraction – Bahay Na Bato, Bato de Luna Art Gallery and Kamay na Bato.

The Turtle House is the main attraction of Bato de Luna. The building houses 3D paintings of human faces in different expressions.
Popularly called as the “Pebble Capital of the North”, the pebble stones are the most abundant resources in Luna. The locals used it to build houses, roads, landscaping and home decorations.
Aside from agriculture and the fishing industry, tourism plays a huge role in the local economy.

A Fusion of Art and Nature

Upon entering Bato de Luna, visitors are greeted by an array of sculptures crafted from stones and wood. These artworks range from whimsical figures to abstract designs, each telling its own story. The gallery’s proximity to the sea enhances the experience, with the soothing sounds of waves complementing the visual feast. A notable feature is the serene pebble beach at the back, offering a tranquil spot for reflection and photography.

The Story Behind Bato de Luna

Bato de Luna is owned by couples Beverly and Kim Yoon (a Korean who is a naturalized Filipino citizen). Mr. Kim drew inspiration from the enduring lifespan of turtles when he designed the Turtle House, hoping the structure could also endure time. Kim carves rocks and stones turning these into works of art, mostly images of creatures of the sea like turtles. His dedication not only brought life to the stones but also fostered a deeper appreciation for art within the community.  Also, Mr. Yoon has trained some residents on sculpting, and some of their works are on display.

The Gallery

The gallery charges a modest entrance fee of PHP 50, making it accessible to a broad audience. The premises is well-maintained including the variety of art pieces on display. Ample parking space is available, though it can become crowded on weekends.

Bato de Luna Art Gallery is more than just an exhibition space; it’s a sanctuary where art and nature converge, offering visitors a unique sensory experience. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or simply seeking an instagrammable place, this gallery in Luna, La Union, promises a memorable journey through creativity and natural beauty.
